Nice Mulie with a 6.5 Swede « Thread Started on Oct 24, 2009, 6:20pm »
I lucked out and got a land owners permit to hunt a private ranch for Mule Deer. Wasn't expecting to get to hunt this year so the permit was a nice surprise.
For 20+ years I've always used my old tack driving Rem 700 in .30-06. This year I broke tradition and used a CZ 550 chambered in 6.5x55 Swede. I hunted for all of about 5 minutes when a herd of Mulies jumped the fence and headed into the pasture. There were 2 nice bucks one a very large 4x4 and a 3x4 with a smallish rack but big bodied. Since I'm a total meat hunter I've never cared much about racks. So the deer that presented the best target is the one who is in the freezer now, that would be the 3x4.
One shot through the boiler room with the Swede and that is all she wrote. Very impressive round. The 140 grain Hornady BTSP bullet powered by IMR4350 went in one side and right out the other. Deer made it about 40 yards and down he went. The funny thing was is the big deer went over to him as if to say "Hey old chap no time for a nap don't you see that the girls are leaving."
Anyone use the Swede for deer or Elk. What load do you like?
