According to Handloader magazine you can get 150-200 more FPS from the longer cartridge than a 45/70. Find some modern high pressure recognized loads and start there. Chronograph them and when you get the speed up to that level stop. How long is your barrel?

Would you like some load data for smokeless loads in original Winny's ? I have a book with that info in it....
Original factory loads were .45-90-300, .45-85-350, .45-82-405, all in the same case dimensions for the model 1886. The smokeless load data listed on page 87 were fired in an original factory M1886 mfg in 1894. twist rate was listed as 1 -32.
Load # 5 listed is 300 grain Hornady with 65 grains of IMR 3031 velocity through a chronograph @ 15 was listed as 2026 fps. group size @ 100 yds listed as 2 1/16 "
CAST bullet # 457191 300 grains 19.5 grains Unique velocity @ 15 ft , listed as 1649 fps, 6 " group @ 100 yds
Page # 95 in the book lists the following loads for .45-90
Remington 405 gr jacketed bullet 58 grains IMR 3031 MV @ 15 ' 1801 fps, group size was listed as 2 7/8 " @ 100 yds
Same bullet with 45.5 grains RE - 7, MV 1830, grp was 2 9/16 " @ 100 yds
Range temps were 66 * F, Oheler 33 chronometer @ 15 ' from muzzle. Author notes these are maximum loads listed by him for use in his original M 1886 Winchesters. One was mfg 1894 other gun was mfg 1910.
The book is " The Winchester Lever Legacy " ISBN # 0-9620267-1-9, author is Clyde Williamson. The author wrote this book based on 25 years of personal experience loading and shooting original Winchester leverguns. I have NOT fired any of these loads myself, so I am just repeating here what I have read.....
