 forward ejection
« Thread Started on Jul 8, 2009, 10:31am »

i need a "fix" idea from someone.
my marlin 1894 45 colt ejects the empty cases forward of the firing line. i can't recover my brass until after the stages are over but by then the brass buzzards have snatched it.
anyone know a fix?

full details follow:
i'm at war with my local sass nashville club and soon to be with the memphis club when the state match comes in sept. not bad tho, we're all buddies in reality.
i have been loosing 100% of my brass each match. about 60-80 rounds per weekend. i can not afford this. so, i made a little clear plastic deflector held on to my gun with a wiretie. since then, i have recovered 100% of my brass at the unloading table. yea!!!
however, some buttweed called foul on me claiming according to sass rules, i have added an external modification.
i have counter filed "on paper" that the plastic piece only helps me recover my brass. it does not modify the gun in any way to improve or change its operation. it only deflects brass back in the staging area.
my counter suit claims, should the club in nashville or memphis require me to remove the deflector because it is "an external modification", that anyone installing a large front site, different rear site, leather on the lever, aftermarket modified stock, etc. should remove them too as these DO improve accuracy, fit and speed and these are definitely external modifications. mine is not a modification, it only directs the brass AFTER it has left the gun.
as it stands right now my club is quiet about it but claim memphis will not let me install the deflector during state match.
so, this can be avoided if i can figure how to make my brass eject rearward such as my marlin 1894 357.
any ideas?

thanks in advance,
bob

well, i guess no one has a "fix".
so, considering i can't get sass to approve the use of a brass deflector without a stage disqualification, i'm changing to my marlin 357 rifle.
i shoot about 6 stages a weekend, that equals about 60 lost rounds of brass per weekend, 240 per month, that's =/- 2800 per year.
unacceptable! just can't afford to lose that much brass to the brass vultures.

Since you did not mention it, I will Ask, How old is your rifle? If the Rifle is not modified, then I would call Marlin and get a new ejector spring. My Marlin 44-40, gets my brass out to the side or straight back at the RO. Deflector shields are a no-no at any level, save the local clubs blind eye for convenience sake.

Also, Rifles that may be worn due to use or action jobs may accelerate these type of problems, since "Gunsmiths" tend to smooth the bearing surface to allow faster action.

Springs, ejectors are cheap so order several and maybe once every 10,000 rounds replace as necessary.

i bought it in 1996 and have shot it at all local sass events since.
it has always spit them forward of the firing line.
it shoots so well, i have never had an action job or even pulled the bolt out.
some people have advised a "wolf" spring kit, others say no because it will not fix the problem.
as you have so wisely advised, i may just give marlin a call and get their take on the issue.
will update here after calling them.
thanks for your suggestion.

PS, yes, i have been threatened to have my rifle hidden from me if i keep using the deflector, but after explaining my situation before the club during lunch, they have turned a blind eye if i promise to get it fixed.
i think they understood the bigger picture of massive brass loss over the past years.
one of the brass vultures pulled a joke on me last week. i shoot 3-D brass and on the vendors table there were several 100 piece bags of brass. 2 bags were 3-D brass. (my brass he picked up). all the other bags were marked $5.00, my brass was marked $50.00.
everyone had a big laugh at my expense, then he gave me my brass back.
i really hate brass vultures! ha!

just spoke with marlin, some of the gunsmiths talked for awhile and came back to say they could not fix the problem, it was designed that way.

i wonder if that means they could fix it but it would be via a modified "fix" rather than a factory "fix"?

Go to the SASS Wire and ask for Johnny Meadows Contact info..I believe he can fix your problem. He is located in Arizona.

No, I need all the speed I can get. Something on my hand would slow me down.
Latest report is, I installed a Wolf spring into the Marlin and it does not eject as far. I then bent down the spring further and shells eject just in front of me and to the right.
Last count is, I am recovering 75% of my brass back.
So, I am just going to leave it as it is. Shoot what brass I can at the month, mid month and Wild Bunch shoots and save the best brass for the special state and local competitions.
I'm please with that and can move on to something else.
You know that there is always something to work or tweak on.

Next weeks thread, "loading bullets that don't fall on the ground before hitting the target". There seems to be room for improvement here.
Last week it looked like I was shooting bullets from a Wily Coyote cartoon gun.

Thanks to everyone for the help.

I would not shoot where my brass is allowed to be kept by someone else. Thats stealing. The brass in an integral part of the gun.
