over all length for 405 ammo
« Thread Started on Nov 3, 2009, 11:38am »

Their is a guy on Gunbroker selling loaded 405 Winchester Ammo with a 400 grain jacketed bullets he makes himself . I want to know the maximum length a 405 can be to function in my new Winchester 405 ? I heard some guys were opening the throat some to use other 400 grain slugs better but not sure about what this guy has to offer . He shoots them in his TC so I want to know some facts on workable length and then ask him . I already asked him the O.A.L. but he did not know . I read some where the length of a 405 is 3.175 inches but not sure if that is average or maximum ? Thanks

The maximum overall length of the cartridge is one thing. The other thing you may have to consider is that his T/C may be throated longer so even if it will cycle through the action it may jam the boolit into the lands.

I hope this helps...

A Winchester book I recently picked up gives the following info for 95's chambered for .405 Win...

Cartridge length - 3.175 Case length - max 2.585 trim - 2.573

Looking at the drawing spec sheet on page 482 doesn't show anything specific on throat length. Sorry, the spec drawing is from Feb 1916. I reckon they didn't worry about those things then. You could extrapolate throat length based on measurements that are given.

Your best bet is to make a chamber casting of your rifle. Get some Cerrosafe from Brownells. I agree with stubshaft, that bigger boolit might jam into the lands even if it does cycle through the gun OK. It would really suck if it jammed deep enough to pull the boolit out of the case when you have to force the lever open ( if the throat's short ). Then you get powder down into the action. I had it happen to me once when I first started doing reloads a long time ago.

HOWEVER --- here's a photo of the original tech drawing from 1916 if this will help you any. Winchester shows the minimum chamber length as 2.55 " and at the breech end it's .4629 "
The throat end shows .4372" with an 8 * 30' taper down to 405. That does appear to be a mighty short throat.

It shows the case dimension by the neck of a loaded cartridge as being .436 " wide. Breech space is given as min .073 max is .076

Great picture!

Guess they didn't have SAAMI to worry about back then.
