I have been away from reloading for a while but now retired am starting up again. I dug out some of my old 38-40 reloads and that is about they look like. I am oiling up my Win 92 rifle and my Ruger Blackhawk, both in 38-40, to start shooting with. I have enough cast Lyman 40143 bullets to last a while.

That last looks like you used a LEE FCD on it.

Are you above the crimp groove with that load?...Is there a crimp groove on that boolit??
The second one looks good.
Unless you are shooting real powerhouse loads, you should not have any problems holding a boolit of that weight.
With the Lee FCD you can only crimp as far as it takes to bottom it out... I have a serious crimp on my 348, With the Lee FCD I have always just bottomed them out + just a little more for good measure.

You shouldn't have much trouble unless you are loading it real heavy. And it has been my experience that you will shear your magazine screw if you are running your loads that hot.

I used it on both but cranked it down a little further. Look OK? |
|
Looks good to me. I have a FCD to use on my .38-40 when I can come up with some large pistol primers. I have found plenty of small rifle primers in my stash but so far nothing else. I must have given them away back when I put reloading aside.

As long as it holds up in the mag it should be OK. The 444 mold is made for the 44/40 in the 1873, IIRC.

Still wasn't clearing for reliable feeding. So I'm back to crimping on the driving band just barely. I'm going to locate a SAECO #444 and try it. I just hope I can throw 429 to 430 diameter bullets with it or I'm stuck with using the the 446. My overall length right now after seating deeper is 1.595 to 1.592.

Montana Bullet Works sell the 444 bullet and its listed with diameters of .427 to .430. You can also get different diameters by changing the alloy. The other bullet will work well in your 44 magnums.

Duke, I would crimp it a bit more so that the od of the crimp is at least .010" less in diameter than the neck od. Unfortunately the Saeco bullet was not designed for the .44-40. Note in the cartridge pic that the .44-40 cartridge with the Saeco bullet is longer than the ones with the other bullets that were designed for the .44-40
As another option, you could try crimping over the front band using the Lee FCD to impress a crimp groove like the 427098 pic below.
Regarding bullets for the .44-40, I have come to prefer either the Magma 200 or RCBS 200 over the Saeco 200 or the Lyman 200 Cowboy since they shoot a bit more accurately (in my rifles).
The Magma 200 and Lyman 427098 have the closest profile to the original bullet.
For b.p. I like the Lyman 427098/SWISS combo for accurate longer distance shooting...out to 300 meters
Saeco bullet not in pic
